To overcome the crisis that hit VW in the early 1990s a statement of belief in Wolfsburg as its location is called for. Volkswagen AG and the City of Wolfsburg join forces by establishing Wolfsburg AG, whose “Autovision” concept adds essential incentives to job security and the future of the city. “Erlebniswelt”, a network of services and leisure amenities spanning the entire city in the medium term, is to attract private capital. In addition, the Autostadt is built ­ a decentralized Volkswagen-sponsored EXPO 2000 project located north of the central city axis. The new city bridge, lifting the virtual dividing line between factory and city, now calls for an urban counterweight on station square: the Science Center, to be built there starting in 2003.
