Both strategic and traffic planning considerations are at the basis of the decision where to locate the Volkswagen Works and the industrial colony “Stadt des KdF-Wagens”. Young architect Peter Koller is given the unique chance to prepare a development plan for a new town. Geographical landmarks such as the Klieversberg, essential traffic routes such as railway and the canal, and an existing renaissance Castle are the cornerstones of his concept. Until 1942, when building activities come to a standstill, the focus is entirely on residential development. In 1945, the time of a fresh political start, the town is named after Wolfsburg Castle, which also becomes the emblem of the place. The status, achieved as an autonomous municipality in 1951, has provided high trade tax yields from the Volkswagen Works, which are now fully invested in urban development.
